Mom Needs Assisted Living

I’ve been caring for my mom for 2 years. Her care needs are increasing & it’s beginning to affect my family life. And frankly, I just don’t have the energy to do it anymore. I need to move her to Assisted Living, but I feel a tremendous guilt in doing so.  Am I a bad daughter?

You are a wonderful daughter for providing care for your mother as long as you have, and for recognizing that it is time to take the next step. Moving her to assisted living doesn’t mean that you have abandoned her or don’t care anymore.  It means you’re making a smart decision to get her the level of care she needs, while improving your relationship with her as her daughter (not her caregiver) and preserving your own family relationships. Assure her that you will visit often & are looking forward to some special mother/daughter time.
